We are now
living in a digital world of information and communication technology that is
why technology is already integrated in almost all institutions especially in
school and particularly I n the teaching and learning process. Students nowadays
are said to be the modern technology learners and that is the reason why the
teachers especially those who use the traditional method of teaching and instructional
materials, need to adjust their teaching in order to effectively meet the needs of the technology learners. They
must help the students in developing their basic knowledge, skills and values
(literacy) and these should be complemented by the six basic digital skills
that can greatly help the students in using technology.
There are
six basic digital skills: solution fluency, information fluency, collaboration
fluency, media fluency, creativity fluency and digital ethics. A student
develops his higher thinking skills when they solve problems and as their metacognition
develops their solution fluency can also be develop. Information fluency—the
students can access accurate information in any resources like internet, videos,
sounds, images and other resources and they can retrieve these information as
well. The learners also have an ability to reflect on and asses for instructive
information packages. Collaboration fluency—the student can collaborate and
work well with their peers and also with their online partners because this promote
higher thinking skills because of the diversity of ideas a student could get
from one another. Media fluency—the
students can evaluate the message in their chosen media but when they evaluate
they need to have an analytic mind. A creative ability to publish digital
messages like blogs where we can post our reflection or other educational
messages that can also be helpful to others. Creativity fluency—the learners’
ability to add meaning by putting background designs, font style and layout on
their output which makes the output appears beautiful and attractive. Digital ethics—the
learners nowadays can be called digital citizen since they are now in the
digital world. Although we have the privilege to access information as well as
input it in the internet and other resources, and a privilege to express our
ideas, feelings and opinions, still we must be responsible in our actions
because as we all know the digital world is not free from those who exploit the
digital space.
When the
learners are already equip with this fluency skills they can now be proficient
in using the technology that can contribute greatly to their success in the
millennial world.
